Who Will Serve The Homeless?

Do you have a servant heart? Do you wish that you could help out in your community? Wish you could figure out some ways that your church can get involved with helping the homeless community? If the homeless is on your heart then do something about it. Wanting to help and serve others less fortunate is often times just a passing thought. It’s time to put some feet to your heart and get involved.

Make a list of ideas from area churches that you have seen serving the homeless.

Ideas to ponder: help out at a local soup kitchen. Some times these kitchens only serve through the week, Monday through Friday. Go to them and ask if they would be willing to work with your church and let you serve on the weekend. Most will provide bagged lunch items for you and all you need to do is assemble the lunches and be there to hand them out.

Clothing drives are another way churches are helping the homeless. Have your church to donate articles of clothing that are in good shape and set up an area for the homeless or less fortunate to come and pick up clothes for themselves and their family, all of which would be free. Kind of like a free yard sale.

You can also make blessing bags. In these plastic zip lock baggies have toiletries, socks, hand warmers, water, gum, crackers, beef jerky, wash cloth and soap or hand wipes, anything you would want or need if you were say camping. Keep them in your car and as you see ones that are homeless, hand them out. These help to minister to those that may have been stranded on the side of the road waiting for help. Maybe someone forgot his or her lunch at work, it isn’t a meal but it’s food. You will find many uses for these bags just imagine the impact you would have just for reaching out when everyone else drives or walks by.
