Make A Difference: Volunteer!

The growing number of homeless people in our country are in desperate need of basic provisions for survival.  These people need food, shelter, clean clothes, and the emotional support to get back on their feet.  Many of them need job counseling and guidance in how to start over in life and make something out of their crumpled dreams.  There are many ways you can help the homeless, but here are just a few.

First, you can volunteer at a homeless shelter.  When you work in the shelter, you will often be passing out linens or directing visiting people to temporary cots where they can sleep.  You might be asked to pass out toiletries or fill out entrance paperwork.  You could even volunteer to serve as an advocate for residents of the homeless shelter and try to help them find places of employment and a permanent place to live.

Next, you could volunteer at a soup kitchen.  These are places where there is not adequate space for homeless people to sleep overnight, but there is a large kitchen where hot meals can be prepared and passed out among the homeless.  You could help cook or clean in a soup kitchen.  Many soup kitchens also like to have volunteers to serve the food and interact with the homeless people.  This offers important encouragement and helps you get a better understanding of who the homeless people in your city are.  When you see the wide assortment of people from various backgrounds that are affected by homelessness, you will probably be quite surprised.
