The Daily Bus Ride

I just noticed that I sat on a piece of gum as I waited for the bus to take me to work.  I work downtown, and owning a car in this city is downright expensive.  I actually enjoy taking the bus because I get to meet a lot of interesting people.  As I went up the steps to get on the bus, I noticed that the gum spot on my dress wasn’t nearly as noticeable as I had thought it would be.  The bus was overly crowded that day and I saw that there was one seat left next to a gentleman reading the newspaper.  I sat down next to him and glanced over his shoulder at the paper.  He was reading up on electric vehicle news.  It made me wonder if this bus was an electric bus.

The man noticed that I was looking over his shoulder and asked if I owned an electric vehicle.  I told him that my husband knew of someone who had converted their old Chevy Cavalier into an electric car by buying an electric car conversion kit.  I didn’t own one personally, but had always wondered how much money I would save by owning one.  The nice gentleman then told me that he was looking into an electric moped because he didn’t exactly enjoy the bus ride every morning.  That’s why this article piqued his interest.

The article discussed the many different types of electric vehicles including the electric car, electric scooters, electric bikes, electric buses, hybrid cars, electric mopeds and hybrid buses.  It talked about all of the benefits of electric vehicles like having less maintenance costs and saving money on gas.  It even gave pictures of some of these vehicles.  Then I noticed that this exact bus that I was riding on was in the paper!  I guess that answered my question on whether or not it is an electric bus.  The article also stated that electric vehicles are zero-emission vehicles, which is of huge importance for big cities where air pollution is a problem.  No wonder why this city uses electric buses I thought!  I read on.  It gave an interesting fact that electric vehicles are quieter than gas-run cars.  That would be a huge step up in this busy city.

One other thing that it mentioned was electric bikes.  Instead of getting just a plain old bike and showing up to work or school sweaty, an electric bike could insure you get there without the sweat and tears.  It is still extremely cost-efficient and gets you to work effortlessly up those huge hills along the way. I thought those were all very good points and very relevant for this city and it’s transportation issues.

I’m glad the bus was full that day so I could sit next to the man reading the paper. Not only is he looking into getting a moped now, I am seriously considering it for myself too.  Maybe then I would never run into the problem of sitting in gum and making a nice spot on my dress, no matter how big or small.
